Our Work
Wasaya Group Inc.
Wasaya Group Inc. began in 1989 when Wasaya Airways LP was incorporated by twelve First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario—with the purpose of acquiring controlling interest in Kelner Airways. In 1993, it was rebranded Wasaya Airways Limited, and by late 1998, Wasaya Group held full ownership, making it entirely First Nations–owned.
Wasaya operates from Thunder Bay, with hubs also in Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, and Pickle Lake.
“Wasaya” means “rising sun” in Oji‑Cree. The airline’s sunburst logo, featuring eight rays, represents each of its original owner communities.
The Challenge
In early 2025, Wasaya released a Progress Report on aligning with the Canadian Human Rights Commission’s Accessibility Plan.
This included facility upgrades (ramps, braille signage), and accessible digital systems meeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards, and diverse communication formats. Wasaya had an outdated site that was non-compliant and didn’t function properly on mobile devices. The user-experience was dated and the site structure made it difficult for users to navigate and book flights.
The Result
Partnering with Wasaya, Shout Media developed a new look for the new website with the following features:
- Modern design and fresh images and graphics while adhering to Wasaya’s brand guidelines.
- The site map created an experience that was very simple to navigate and allowed the new site information to be accessed in very few steps
- Integration with Wasaya’s booking and payment system
- AODA – WCAG 2.1 Level AA Compliant
